My name is Jodi Chassells, and I make all the contacts regarding our nonprofit Gunnar’s Purpose. My husband (Scott) and I have been married for 19 years and have a forever 17 yr. old son, whose name is Gunnar. My husband, Scott, is a full-time employee of NLR Fire Dept (a local fire dept.) as a Firefighter/EMT and has been for 20 plus yrs. He is also a Paramedic for the same dept. We run a non-profit foundation called Gunnar’s Purpose. My husband and I would like to be a part of your Because I can campaign. Our foundation is based on telling our son’s story, how we have had to lean on God for guidance throughout this horrific journey, sharing hope with others and talking with teens about high-risk behaviors. The high-risk behaviors that we discuss with teens include playing games that can cost one their life, social media challenges, bullying, cyber bullying, drugs, alcohol and the risk that can come with partaking in such behaviors. He also will talk to them about peer-pressure, self-worth and self-responsibility. Helping them to try and understand that when they partake in such behaviors it not only effects them, but everyone around them, especially loved ones.
Our son’s (Gunnar’s) story is this:
Gunnar is our only child and is forever 17 years old. He was a senior at a NLRHS and was a smart, funny and very outgoing young man. He knew all the right things to say at the right time and would light up any room he walked into. He had many friends and was always known to hang out with teens much older than him. He is loved by many people within our community and beyond.
On November 23, 2017, our lives changed forever. Gunnar was out with friends and was trying every way possible to fit in with the group of teens he was hanging around with. Like most he thought he was invincible. On that night, Gunnar found himself playing a very dangerous game of Russian Roulette when he accidentally shot himself and lost his life.
Our goal with the non-profit is that if we can save one more teen from losing their life and one more parent/parent’s from going through this same devastation we will be successful.
